Do I Need Special Yoga Clothing?

Most people who make a lifestyle change like beginning a new fitness program expect to spend at least some money on their new routine. Yoga, unlike many forms of exercise, requires a relatively minor investment. In fact, you probably have the yoga clothing sitting in your closet right this minute.

Yoga Clothing: Shoes

You can save your money on shoes for yoga, since many people do yoga barefoot. If you decide to follow in this tradition, always use a sticky mat or a rug while you do the different postures to be sure your feet don’t slip. Other people swear by the use of Crocs—a sandal-like shoe—for yoga, and still others use tennis shoes or other athletic shoes. The bottom line is to use the footwear that makes you feel comfortable.

Yoga Clothing: Pants

You’ll want to be able to move easily as you flow from one posture to the next, so avoid anything too tight or form fitting. A pair of shorts of work out pants, perhaps made of Spandex or Lycra to absorb perspiration, is all that is needed.

Yoga Clothing: Tops

Since yoga utilizes some inverse (upside down) postures, you probably want your top to be a little form-fitting so that it doesn’t fall down around your head, leaving your classmates with a view.

A tank top usually works well for yoga and since many types of yoga encourage perspiration, the top’s fabric should be somewhat absorbent. You should be able to find what you need at any large discount store. Of course, sometimes its fun to wear a top with a message, for instance if you want to display your new devotion to Buddha, you can order appropriate tops from any online yoga supply stores.

Yoga Clothing: Accessories

Some yoga sites also offer leggings, bags to carry your equipment, and eye bags and neck pillows for meditation. The sky is the limit when you enter the accessory domain, but it is recommended you keep it simple, so that you can focus on your asanas rather than if your pants match your shoes.

Yoga clothing, is easy to find and inexpensive. And you can take the money you saved on special clothes and equipment and spend it where it will do the most good: on an excellent yoga training program with an experienced teacher and staff dedicated to helping you learn the fundamentals of this extraordinary program of exercise, balance, and unity.
